MR angiography (MRA) evaluates blood vessels and help identify abnormalities or diagnose atherosclerotic (plaque) disease. It does so using powerful magnetic field, radio waves and computer analysis. The biggest advantage of this study is that it does not use ionizing radiation and can be done with or without injection of a contrast material called gadolinium. Gadolinium contrast is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than iodinated contrast material.
